On June 5, 2024, The City of Calgary experienced a catastrophic feedermain break on a 1950 mm transmission line. This line is Calgary’s largest and most critical portion of the feedermain network.

An emergency alert was sent out on June 6, requesting residents to conserve water as reservoir volumes depleted. Stage four water restrictions were put in place and strategies were implemented to sustain a summer of repairs. While significantly impacting the distribution system, the situation also required the Glenmore Water Treatment Plant to sustain production near maximum levels, putting added pressure on other critical pump stations.

This session will highlight the impacts of the failure and return to service including:
  • assessment of the damage
  • communication and actions taken by Water Services
  • impacts on surrounding water and wastewater systems
  • system stabilization and operation
  • consideration and operation of bypasses
  • creative repair and contractor options
  • flushing, de-chlorination and release into the river
  • learnings, failures and lessons
